Presumably he cut a deal and went State's evidence. But presumably before they agreed to the deal, they made him give 'em everything he had. True, at trial depositions aren't the same as a live witness, but...

This may seem an obvious point, but I think we need to consider that this was done for some very specific reason. I don't think the idea was to "make an example" of the victims, and so discourage others from cooperating with the authorities; had that been the case, I believe the killers would have found a way to communicate that message clearly. I think as well that it was done now, rather than earlier or later, for a specific reason.

So we only have to figure out what that reason was, lol...
