I agree with your idea of starting over with a fresh and clean operating system. The only catch is that when I install Windows98 from my CD onto a freshly (empty) formatted hard drive, Norton consistently finds 17 errors. (Not ever 16 or 18!) Given this, I fix the errors, then make my backup(s).

By the way, to load Windows from Microsoft's CD, add the drivers for my laptop, and re-establish the settings I like, takes me nine hours. I have everything I do recorded on paper so I'm not wasting any time experimenting.

When I post suggestions for someone trying to fix their system, I'm assuming that they don't have a 'clean' backup they can restore from in a few minutes. I'm only trying to save them the unpleasantness of restoring their system from distribution CDs. Occasionally, I remember to include a suggestion that they back-up their stuff once it's working to make the next bit of trouble less disruptive.

Cheers, PW.
