It's not just gambling that baseball is worried about, its whether or not the person bet on baseball games. Denny McLain was a pitching hero in the late 60's (had a 31-6 record in '68) who was disciplined for gambling activities, but he wasn't banned because his gambling had nothing to do with baseball.

Baseball is down on the 1919 White Sox because those guys threw games. Even if Rose did bet on baseball, no one believes he would throw a game. But I guess the mere appearance of impropriety...

Baseball is so paranoid about players gambling because it threatens the billion dollar sports gambling industry it relies on to whip up interest in their product.
