Nancy.. Please don't feel ganged up on with my comments but..

The Bible says that God threw those people out of the Promised Land for Idolatry and Sin.

Sorry this is not quite the right verse can't remember where but it is close:

Deuteronomy 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.

Nancy,

Don't get mad - get Biblical! Wait a second, getting mad *is* Biblical. OK, go ahead and get mad. I'm not, nor have I ever been mad while posting on this thread.

The scriptures you note are just talking about strategy. Let's get to the good (God?) stuff:
Joshua 8:24-26
"And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.
For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai."

Nancy, they chased them into the woods where they had fled the field of battle and slaughtered them all. Then they went back to town and slaughtered everyone there.
Thou shalt not kill, indeed!
