Re post from yahoo"the art of the deal" The Art of a Deal by: ramsis4 10/30/1999 3:50 pm EDT Msg: 125424 of 125519 AT&T's ultimate goal is to bundel services into every house in America. So Armstrong opens his wallet and starts buying cable companies left, right and center. Starts with TCI, well look Mr. Armstrong TCI comes with a company called @Home networks, what they do is enable two way communications for internet access, on demand video, great company that can help us with our bundeled services dream.... coolness. Lets do this big, and the AT&T way. How about we buy MediaOne, and from what I hear they have more cable than we can shake a stick at, @Home will help us upgrade them for internet access, then AOL would be kissing our feet for access. Late night the telephone rings at the Armstrong residance, it is Mr. Hindery. You are not going to believe this Mr. Armstrong, that son of a gun TJ bought Excite... What am I going to tell Yahoo ? OK Hindery we will talk about this tomorrow morning ...try to get some sleep now. Leo calls TJ first thing in the morning, what the heck did you do that for ? TJ, we refuse to be just a dumb pipe thats why. AOL puts on its OpenAccess war armor and goes to every city hall in the country, trying to stop the MediaOne merger. Mr. Armstrong if this OpenAccess fly we are screwed, the last thing we need is for the goverment to block this merger, worst yet regulate our fees for access to cable. we already lost our #1 position in Wireless providers, and now we have the long distance war on our hands. Cox no firgging way we are going to split Excite, tell AT&T to go and suck on a lemon. By contract and until July 2002 AT&T has no choice in the matter they have to accept this and have to provied the exclusivity to Excite@Home until then. Excellent move on Cox part, this way and indirectly they are utilizing all of AT&T cable via Excite@Home free of charge.... it is like the iceing on the cake baby. Well Mr. Armstrong what are we going to do ? it looks like @Home want to keep Excite. Dont worry people, Portland and the rest of the country have no problems us merging with MediaOne but under one condition, we open internet access to AOL on our cable. However, we dont want the government regulating rates on dis ting of ours. So here is what we are going to do. Because of our contract with @Home we are stuck with them until 2002, only a high court can break this exclusivity contract, also the FCC has no problem with us controlling things for a while. So let us go to court and make this a law rather than fight it here and there. Here is what our argument going to be. Please judge let us merge with MediaOne, make some money so we can upgrade the system and relize some profit, and if takes that we sell our interest in Excite we will do that for you judge, but we have this exclusive with Excite which only you can terminate. Just dont regulate our fees. Mr. Armstrong you are a God of deal making, we are not worthy. This way we make some money from the Excite thingee. @Home, Cox and even AOL will be like that 10 million dollar diamon ring around our baby finger. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
