I believe this is Kopin's supplier of GaAs substrates.

American Xtal just made more in one quarter than Kopin has ever made in a year. At 30+, maybe the stock was trading too much on the future; now the temporary problems have caused people to focus on the present. Of course, with Kopin, the focus is always on the future.

Kopin has no exposure to the satellite market in which AXTI's business has been disrupted. In their earnings release, AXTI said "despite these disappointments, we continue to see strong performance in our GaAs and InP substrate businesses." In their 2nd quarter 10-Q, page 16, you can see where they participate in some of the same food chains as Kopin, one level down:

A significant portion of our prospective customers for our substrates are wireless communications manufacturers, fiber optic communications manufacturers and manufacturers of other high-speed semiconductor devices that are produced from GaAs substrates using either the LEC or HB techniques.

These customers would not necessarily be involved with HBT-based devices, and some may do epitaxial deposition in-house to suit their requirements.

I'll put AXTI on my watch list, but I may put off new purchases for a while. This market is just getting too crazy for me. If you survey your portfolio and see the cheap stocks at 50 times earnings (ttm, not Y2000, or Y2001), and the expensive ones at 50 times sales, maybe it's time to step off!
