With the NBA season beginning tomorrow night, I would like to take this opportunity to put forth some ideas on rules changes I would like to see the NBA undertake. I am sure that these changes can only help improve the quality of the game we all know and love.

)Make each quarter start with a jumpball

)Move to the international rules on goaltending where a player can knock away a ball that is above the rim after it touches the rim

)Widen the lane

)Require at least one player on each team to have his hair in cornrows. I think that most teams in the league already abide by this proposition.

)Have women in bikinis waltz out onto the court to announce the beginning of each quarter like they do in boxing

)Take a 5 minute stretch of the 3rd quarter to have mandatory mismatches. For example, we could have each team nominate an "under 6'3" player" and another "over 6'8"" player. Then on alternating possessions, the mismatched players would have to play each other. For example, if Portland is playing the Knicks, then we would get to know the answer to the questions, "Does Damon Stoudamire have the quickness to drive by Patrick Ewing?" "If so, will he get blocked anyway?" "Can Chris Childs defend Arvydas Sabonis in the post?"

)Ban Michael Jordan from doing any more commercials in which he has to impersonate a cartoon character.

)Have the basket move around for part of the game. Then we'll really see how good of a shooter Reggie Miller is.

)If a fight starts on the court, have the refs not break it up. Instead, go hockey style and start the music!

Another thing that I'll be watching for this year is how well the Celtics do. Remember the season opener two years ago when in Pitino's first game, they beat the Chicago Bulls (with Michael Jordan)? They went ballistic after the game, and expectations have always been high. But Pitino really hasn't done anything in his tenure there. If he has another crappy year, I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves.
