Jim - <Why do they spread the fabs all over the place like that?>

* - Earthquakes/natural disasters/acts of God...ensure supply

* - Favorable tax structures and land valuations

* - In the case of Ireland, I believe there are EC tariff considerations / benefits to manufacturing in Europe, amongst other reasons.

* - No one site could possibly have a suitable infrastructure or a labor market big enough to house 12 operating fabs (the current #).

Trivia factoid of the day:

During the Gulf war, Fab 8 in Jerusalem shipped product every single day for the duration of the war, and did not miss any significant production commitments. At the time, F8 housed relatively state of the art processes and products.
