No, I never had to support myself at all. Went to a private girls' college, lived in a dorm for four years, and earned my spending money singing, which was my idea of heaven. My parents believed it was their responsibility to pay for everything all the way through. I guess I was very spoiled and lucky.

The only accident I had with a hand in college, was when I got too enthusiastic as "Song Leader" of the Sophomore class, which, believe ir or not was an official class office in charge of any and all spirit songs and song contest arrangements and productions through the year, and I dislocated my thumb while clapping too hard. I had to go to the emergency room when it swelled up and turned all black, and it was humiliating to have to admit how I had done it.
(WEll, I was standing on a chair and leading the CLass of 70s Spirit Song --you know that famous Dem Bones of Westhampton College?
Even Spirits never die!
Dem bones gonna rise again!
Hit em in the head, knock em in the eye!
Dem bones gonna rise again.
I know it. Deed I know it , sister,
I know it-
Dem bones gonna rise again.

Never heard it, huh?

Once in grad school, I was playing the piano for a musical at a dinner theatre, and I slammed my thumb in the car door when I arrived one night.. it was too late to get anyone else and so I had to go on and play. That was really painful, especially the glissandos. I bled on the keys.

And they say football is dangerous.
