GM Lifts Wraps on PNGV
Hybrid

The secret's out. GM wasn't supposed to take
the wraps off its PNGV (Partnership for a New
Generation Vehicle) hybrid-electric sedan until
the North American Auto Show in Detroit in
January, 2000.

EV World had been given a sneak peak at the
car back in June, but had promised to keep
what we saw secret. We honored that
promised until we received the above photo by
email with a note that GM had decided to
officially unveil the car to auto journalists.

According to a private briefing given EV World
in June, the five passenger sedan is powered by
an Isuzu diesel engine mounted in the rear of the
car and cooled through special honey-comb
venting on the rear quarter panels. The vehicle
displayed in June uses a front-mounted EV1
Generation Two drive train. Surprisingly, the
car is reported to have a slicker drag
co-efficient than the ultra-slippery EV1.

The goal of the PNGV program, co-funded by
US car makers and federal dollars is to develop
a family car that will get 80 mpg. Ford recently
handed over its P2000 PNGV sedan, also
powered by a hybrid-electric diesel engine
combination, to the Department of Energy, no
doubt prompting GM's decision to release the
above photograph.
