RE:"Wasn't AMD chastised for their the Athlon only being available
built-to-order at first? Looks like Intel is pulling an AMD, AGAIN!"...

It seems Intel has pulled an Athlon, only worse. At least AMD had a chipset for the mainstream.
AMD released the Athlon early to buffer poor earnings. Intel released the CuNeverMind early to save face in the MHZ race and to save some credibility with OEMs who had entrusted them to come through before Christmas and were duped. In payment, what did they get for their loyalty? A few Coppermines that run on 100 buses and one or two 733s that have to use a VIA chipset. Meanwhile they slip a good deal on P-III-500s to E-machines who's eating them up (the larger OEMs) from the bottom.
As far as the loyal OEMS are concerned, who needs enemies when you have Intel? <G>

As far as notebooks, the new P-III notebook chips look impressive but the K6s seem to be in a good position. The K6s are great notebook chips. Cheap, low power, good integer scores and who needs to blast mutant aliens and other FPU intensive programs on a notebook anyway?
I'd gladly accept a little less performance for 1/2 the cost. Notebooks are money holes anyway.
