You make some interesting points. What if the dogs weren't there at all? If Chalem and Lehmann really had been planning a trip--perhaps together with Conkling and the unidentified fourth man--the dogs would have been taken to a kennel or left with a friend. So where are the pups? Did Chalem say anything to whomever he took them to? If, of course, that's what happened...
