The actual room is likely irrelevant. Recall it was sparsely furnished. Maybe no furniture there to begin with. Or if there were, it may have been the business area where computer(s) was/were set up. Maybe a laptop and the business papers on the dining room table. (Remember the girlfriend wasn't there to fuss about neatness.)

With no on-grounds security or wait staff on duty, apparently anyone could approach the front door and gain immediate access to Chalem. Once open and if the visitor/visitors were armed then anything could play out.

It seems not to be a moment of passion at the scene. No business meeting that went bad and turned to violence. No manslaughter here. There seems to be the pall of intent and premeditation and possibly even foreboding.

What were both men doing in the dining room ?

Well, they coulda been eating dinner. Occam's razor, you know. The "friends" claimed they last spoke with Chalem at about 7:30, and that the calls they made after 8 went unanswered.

Or perhaps they were working there; needed a big table for some reason...
