I do not think that the number of bullets indicates a non-professional hit, but if it isn't a professional hit have the bullet casings be dusted for fingerprints?

Are the dogs are in a kennel, if a nearby kennel, that might indicate a short trip, maybe the kennel is in Florida, maybe Columbia. Where ARE the dogs?

A careful assassin might also have had the wit to take the cell phones away with him. That wouldn't, of course, have prevented the cops from eventually checking on the calls made to them, but it would very likely have delayed things. He should also have removed any computer disks and drives.
