Oh, I don't know if I would conclude having shell casings laying around is the sign of an amateur hit. Once the killer opts for more capacity than a revolver, just clean up the bullets before hand. Certainly the casings will give a forensic tie to the weapon, but so does the spent bullet and you are going to dump the gun anyway. And I haven't noticed manufacturers stamping lot numbers on ammo to narrow down purchases. And if they are tagenting the powder, that will be there anyway.

In my mind, picking up the brass would actually be the sign of an amateur - you are increasing the time on scene and you will no doubt miss one or two anyway.
