Well, yes, in most cases, two guys alone wouldn't bother to Make Things Nice. Or even to cook. I did consider the possibility that they answered the door because they thought it was the pizza delivery guy, but discarded the idea. Had pizza indeed been ordered, PDG would have turned up sooner or later, and probably have found himself in the midst of a highly unpleasant situation.

The car was obviously rented because something was to be either picked up or dropped off in Tennessee or on the way to Tennessee. One way trip. No one would use their own car for a one way trip.

Plane ride to Florida for preplanned Anniversay celebration.
Son with father because he was not invited to preplanned Anniversay celebration.

If you are writing a mystery novel, all of the above would have been carefully planned out to throw everyone off. The real reason, of course, (in the novel) would be a quick plane flight to Florida for pick up of wife and then another flight hop into the Carribbean and on to places unknown.

Oh and the dogs would have been boarded or a friend would have come to the house to stay and care for them in the owners absence.

Anyone going for the movie rights??
