It looks like disk-using entertainment products are finally arriving. ====================================================================== SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Replay TV will launch a new personal television product exclusively on Amazon.com Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AMZN) consumer electronics site on Tuesday, in one of the first cases of a product being launched online. Replay's $699 product lets consumers record and play television programs on a hard disk using a special player, one of a new class of consumer products that helps users to pre-select shows, put broadcast on pause to watch later, or even order items over the Internet. Amazon will be the exclusive retailer to Replay Networks' latest product, ReplayTV 2020 until Nov. 15. Replay TV, a competitor of Tivo Inc. (NYSE:TIVO), said the new product has 20 hours of storage, twice the amount of its existing model, and it will be sold at the same price as the existing model. "Amazon.com is an ideal place to introduce new products," said Steve Shannon, Replay Networks' vice president of marketing. "It has excellent customer service and detailed information on each product." Amazon electronics group product manager Richard Chin said "it's easier and faster to launch the product through us than to go to a sales force of 500 people around the country and explain it." The launch will include a detailed user manual. The Amazon executive said that it has had success selling relatively high-end products, including the $999 Palm Theater, a hand-held DVD player. "The products we sell are very mainstream," he said. Shannon said that even though the online sales route is being used for the launch of the new Replay product, "bricks-and-mortar" sales will not be replaced by online. "A lot of people want to touch and use a product before they buy it. The online is more for the early adopter," he said. The company plans to market largely through stores the Replay product made by Panasonic Industrial Co. of Japan, owned by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (TOKYO:6752).
