Perhaps, but the shorting opportunity may have passed as the wholesalers and retailers knew things were going wrong as early as September, I think. One can imagine all all of them calling some brother-in-law in the brokerage business to let him in on the secret.

Candy sales from October through December account for 40% of Hershey sales. They told their customers that anyone ordering candy in October would not receive it in time for Halloween. Current turn-around time is said to be 12 days, but no one knows for sure (least of all Hershey).

Apparently, they are calling big accounts like 7-11 weekly to find out what exactly it is that they are delivering. K-Mart is actually air-freighting candy to its stores to keep from running out. Others are just calling Mars & Nestle and reducing Hershey shelf space.
