BOB MARTIN USA: RE: SDLI

I am familiar with SDLI in a vague sort of way as one of the players in the optical telecom/broadband sector. I have been playing this sector by investing in JDSU and have a large, overweighted position in it. This sector is red-hot and has very few players; the others are ETEK and Optical Coatings (OCLI).

I picked JDSU because: (1) It had run up the least over the past twelve months and was more favorably valued going forward; (2) With the Uniphase/Sitel merger, I saw JDSU becoming the first dominant player (and the largest) with the best prospects for a long-term hold position; (3) I though Kevin Kalkhoven was an extremely astute CEO with a very aggressive outlook and a stated game play of making numerous key acquisitions to expand and reinforce JDSU's dominant position as a one-stop company for providing broadband solutions via WDM and fiberoptics.

If I were to have picked a second player, I would have invested in OCLI because it has several diverse and unique businesses, differentiating it from the others.

I would be quite interested in what your research has turned up and what you think of SDLI as a possible investment for the next 12 months.

O/T Bob: Since you asked on this thread about SDLI, here are some ideas on it.

Both the JDSU and SDLI threads on SI have posters who know what they are talking about. Both discuss SDLI and you can get some useful data and info there.

SDLI is much smaller than JDSU but is particularly strong in the booming area of undersea fiber. Worth some due diligence IMO.

Best.
