Those rental bowling shoes could have immense scientific value.

Can you imagine the fungal biodiversity inside those shoes? There could be novel species of yeasts and molds inside those shoes--enough to make a career for an ambitious mycologist. No need to wander through tropical rain forests looking for exotic flora and fauna. Who knows, the next great penicillin could be on sale at eBay, waiting to be discovered, in the form of those humble shoes.
