Advanced Micro lowers Y2K cost estimates by $5 mln

WASHINGTON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Computer chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. <AMD.N> said Monday in its latest quarterly report that its Y2K costs will be $20 million, or $5 million lower than previously projected.

Actual costs incurred through the end of the third quarter of 1999 were about $15 million, most of which were expensed, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Expenses for its Year 2000 project, which involve modifications to software and manufacturing systems, are being funded through operating cash flows, said AMD, whose Y2K readiness plan covers four major areas, including information technology, manufacturing and product design.

The company said it has modified or replaced major portions of its application software so that systems will function properly next year and in following years. Application software consists of business software for accounts payable and receivable, payroll and shipping.

AMD also reported that it believes all critical year 2000-related manufacturing areas will be ready for the new year by the end of 1999.

AMD shares closed Friday at 19-13/16 on the New York Stock Exchange.

AMD Launches Reseller Pro Web Site to Provide Training to Reseller Sales Personnel

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1999--AMD (NYSE:AMD) announced today a new dedicated Web page to train computer resellers about the AMD family of microprocessors, including its leading edge AMD Athlon(tm) processor.

"This new initiative illustrates the high priority we place on our reseller partnerships," said Jim Niekamp, AMD's reseller channel marketing manager. "The Reseller Pro Web site provides 24-hour access to AMD product information, including technical documents, benchmarks and other sales and training tools. We're excited about the opportunity to train reseller sales personnel and to encourage them as they accumulate more knowledge about our products."

Reseller sales personnel register on-line at www.amd.com/resellerpro to participate in the Reseller Pro Web site. The site includes a processor reference guide, an online training course, a list of the currently available AMD family of processors, AMD corporate information, FAQs and press quotes and news articles about AMD products.

"AMD's Reseller Pro Web site gives our sales staff an excellent training tool to keep them informed on the latest AMD microprocessors, including the AMD Athlon," said Jackson Lan, president of PC Club, a computer retail superstore chain with 21 stores in California, Arizona and Nevada.

"Not only does the site provide important technical information, but it presents it in a fun format with rewards for successfully mastering knowledge of AMD's products."

The Reseller Pro site also features the Reseller Educational Achievement Program (REAP). Under this program, Reseller Pro members who successfully pass quizzes can raise their achievement level from the original "associate member" all the way to Master AMD Reseller Professional.

The Reseller Pro Web site was patterned after AMD's Retail Connection site, which provides similar training information to computer retail sales associates. Reseller Pro is part of the overall AMD Reseller Program, which has more than 14,600 members in North America. Reseller Program members receive frequent product updates, and materials and programs designed to help resellers sell AMD processor-based products more effectively.
