Clark, most patents flunk as they aren't original, in a purest sense. Look at the 800 something CDMA patents and their reference and cross reference yet to more patents or studies.

Its almost a farce these days with law firms (no offense J) specializing in submission and then the endless legal wrangling that occurs later over who copying what. It especially comicial with software these days.

Frankly, much of what we think is incremental improvements or great idea's all have there roots in the great idea period from 1920 to 1945, where digital has it's original theorizing done. For what ever reasons, namely microelectronics, we are only now tapping those great theories from that period. Folks like Shannon and Lamarr are the foundation of what we take for granted or hashout to who has done what today. Even the concept of mobile telephony was theorized and postulated in the 20's, but everyone today mistakenly thinks it's only a recent phenomeon of thought or creation.
