I have to agree with you, MSFT was private for quite awhile compared to these internet companies, and I am not quite sure why they did go public. At that time they were battling some very big players (IBM, Lotus, Apple) so it makes sense that although I think they preffered control, they had to go public. Anyway, companies like MSFT and APPL had to go public for the simple reason, that they were so sucessful and their products were selling so well that they needed capital to meet the demand. These newer internet companies are nothing like that. They IPO at the very beginning of their business cycle with negative earnings.
