Goutama - <Also, as I think of more and more about the lack of PIII-733EB parts in the channel, it's becoming more clear to me that Coppermine 733MHZ was released to save Craig Barret's honor (remember about his proclamation of releasing 7xxMHZ Coppermine parts in a recent Intel developers forum). PIII-733EB-CBH ;o)>

Also, Otellini said that he is utterly confident that whatever speed grade Intel releases, it will be in volume.

I guess there is a choice whether to believe him or not.

Also worth repeating; I wonder how much the i820 delay has to do with the 733's being somewhat in short supply? If there is an impending release of i820 before the end of the year, might the OEM's who are going to release i820 based systems be getting the lions share of 733's?

But if you really want one, CPQ has a couple of i840 / 733 systems on their Website, and Micron has a 733 system also.

I'm curious if the report of i820 systems at Comdex is true.

I will take this opportunity to grovel a little bit: I did expect to see more Coppermines in the channel post launch. This is obviously not the case. I was flat wrong, as I did not anticipate a situation where demand was such that the OEM's would be getting virtually all Coppermine shipments post launch.

Best I can tell, some disti's are expecting Coppermine product in the middle of November.

Goutama,

<How they are ceding the low-end market to AMD - by not being aggressive or by not bundling other components as they did before? >

Basically you hit the nail on the head. I don't think Intel is being aggressive at the low-end. Looks like they tried to suffocate AMD at the low-end but realized what that is doing to the overall ASPs.

<Could it also mean that there won't be any more price cuts by Intel?>

I think the low-end/mid range prices are going slightly higher but I do expect priced erosion for the higher end parts.

<If true, Athlon's blended ASP may stay the same as in Q3 and may not go down as Jerry Sanders cautioned in the Q3 CC. This could mean an additional revenue of $20M - $30M! >

I think Athlon ASPs are headed lower (there probably are one or two more price cuts this quarter. Two, if AMD launches higher speed grades) but I see additional revenue for slightly different reasons. Slightly improved K6 ASPs coupled with higher than expected unit shipments. I expect the cumulative effect to be close to $40-60M on the K6 business.

<I think, AMD's tactic - announcement of its intention to sell Communication Division - is working. What do you think?>

I don't know if I would call that a tactic but it does send a clear message that Sander's is not going to give up the microprocessor business like NSM or IDTI did. Was that a factor in Intel going easy on pricing? Hard to tell. Right now, Intel may be acting more out of making Q4 and getting some credibility back in the financial community. With a pretty weak CuMine launch I don't think they have much margin for error. In what may be a rare occurrance it looks like AMD's quarter is in the bag and Intel is reaching. We should have a pretty good idea in about a month.

Thread, Still no "E" (coppermine) parts at thechipmerchant.com but 600B P3 (133 bus) finally appears. Also, the K6-3-400 has disappeared so Register story may be true. Finally, Athlon 700's are listed for the first time.
