To Patrick Sharkey's post

>Today we see a press release from Brocade, and a separate press release from Ancor, together with an update of the Ancor Website. Has your opinion regarding Ancor's product changed in any way in response to the information concerning Ancor's new switch products?

No. Ancor needs to provide MUCH more than just a set of new data sheets in order for anyone (I think) to actually judge the technical merit of their "new" switch. As far as I have been able to tell only one version (the 8 port Loop only) of one model of their Sanbox is available today. As their fabric based switch offerings actually go GA, I'm sure that everyone will be able to accurately measure what they fixed and what they didn't. They have a LONG LONG way to go so I'm not expecting too much here.

>More importantly, what do you see as the product roadmap for these companies in the next 12-18 months?

I couldn't even tell you. I sure as heck don't know. It looks like Ancor will take most of the next 12-18 months just getting their Sanbox products ready for ship. (At least the next 6 months or so it would seem..) I'm sure that each company will try to improve on their current product family.

>In which part of the market will Brocade excel? In which part of the market will Ancor excel? Who else will be a significant SAN market participant at the switch level?

Well I'm not sure how to answer those questions. I think that everyone should look at the market as it is today, and try to draw their own conclusions. I think that the next 6 months will be very important to the SAN switch marketplace, and that much will be learned from what happens next. I certainly haven't heard of any new switch vendors entering the market. Perhaps we'll hear more as 2000 continues.

Sorry I couldn't provide more specific data than that. It's just not my area of interest..
