The internut stocks are like IPO's and their valuations are based on their projected hopes for the future.

IBM is a well established stock with a history. Its stock ran up not because of mere psychology but because its earnings were showing significant growth, namely:

.78
.91
1.08

Now all of a sudden IBM says that these unusually high earnings growth rates will not continue and the stock falls
in valuation.

Thus, perception is certainly important but it is underpined by the stock fundamentals such as growth in earnings and growth in revenues.
