Jim - There you go again! DELL is evil CPQ is Good.<g> I don't think I mentioned CPQ anywhere in my post. CPQ margins have gone from the 30's to the low 20's over the last 2 years, despite the addition of the high margin lines which carry 40% or more margin and comprise half the revenue. I regard DELL's ability to maintain margins in the face of stiff price competition and a changing product mix as a remarkable achievement, and CPQ's failure to use their multi-billion in acquisitions to shore up margin as an execution failure. But I was just talking about DELL, why do you keep taking the discussion to CPQ? I don't understand how you could see my post as saying anything good about CPQ when CPQ was not mentioned even by implication. The only reference which might conceivably have related to CPQ was in the general failure of DELL's competition to adjust to changing market conditions, which is hardly a positive. You know that DELL manages to the top and bottom line. They do not manage to achieve a certain margin. No argument there. What does that have to do with my post? In a recent post, you said that DELL had succeeded in the SMB market at CPQ's expense this quarter. So, you are being disingenuous when you discount DELL's competitive impact in your last post. Instead, you give credit for DELL's superior performance to Intel. Why not give credit to Andy Grove's wife? In the post you refer to, I said that CPQ had targeted SMB and failed, DELL had targeted SMB and succeeded. I did not mention that IBM and HP also failed in their SMB initiatives, but they did. This exactly reinforces my point - DELL is able to thrive in an environment which is hurting DELL's competition. It is well known that Grove admires MSD and has taken a special interest over the years in DELL. Likewise, it is well known that Intel has been the driving force behind "leveling the playing field". Why would you regard that as anything but a benefit to DELL? As to the last part of your post, you seem to have once again decided that personal attacks on me will somehow change the focus of my discussion. This is the well known fallacy of logical argument known as "ad hominum" and is not regarded as a successful debating technique outside the schoolyard. Try responding to my discussion points instead of trying to insult me.
