Bowling Alleys Starting to Get Converted: semibiznews.com Atmel to buy 8-in.-wafer fab from Hitachi Electronic Buyers' News (11/01/99, 03:44:12 PM EDT) SAN JOSE -- Atmel Corp. today made a bid to purchase Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc.'s 8-in. wafer fab in Irvine, Tex. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 650,000-square-foot facility was built in 1997 but has not been equipped. Atmel, San Jose, which signed a letter of intent to buy the plant, said it will begin to equip the fab with 0.18-micron process equipment upon completion of the deal later this year. Production capacity will be available by the end of next year, according to Atmel, which said the plant will run a silicon germanium BiCMOS process to make chips for emerging wireless and digital applications. "In this period of very strong demand for our products, we are pleased to announce this transaction as it will greatly enhance our ability to increase the production of our leading edge semiconductors," said George Perlegos, Atmel's president and CEO. "Also, by acquiring this facility, we will significantly save both the time and the expense associated with building a new fabrication facility."
