Sony Introduces MiniDisc Camcorder

Sony Inc. announced Tuesday a digital camcorder that will record movies
to MiniDisc -- a smaller version of the compact disk. The Tokyo
electronics and entertainment giant said the camcorder will use MD Data
2, a new version that has the same physical dimensions and casing as the
original MiniDisc. However, the camcorder can't write to the original
MiniDiscs, although it can play music from them. The MD Discam stores
its movies in MPEG-2 format. Each disk will be able to hold from 10 to 20
minutes of video, depending on video quality. The Discam also will be able
to take up to 4,500 still images. The MD Discam digital camcorder will
allow the user to edit video scenes through a Java-based in-camera
interface using the included pen or a fingertip, rather than through a
personal computer. Additionally, users will be able to add special effects,
titles and graphics. Sony said the new camcorder will cost $2,299 and will
be available in Japan in early December and in mid-January in the U.S.
Sony will sell the device in regular retail outlets and through its Sony VAIO
Direct Web site (vaiodirect.sel.sony.com).
