SEC? How about the DEA?
Driving to Tennesse to charter a plane to Florida.
Florida's proximity to drug routes.
What about the suitcases?
Sounds like somebody owed somebody something that might have had more to do with controlled substances than SEC violations.

Whoever was really mad here doesn't seem like the type to be filing a brief with the court.

It is possible that there are beneficial owners of some of these entities whose names do not appear on the various indictments and litigation. I think as a preliminary matter we can rule out pecuniary loss as a motive. Someone capable of committing murder could surely be capable of lying during an OEX, an Order of Examination of Judgment Creditor.

The more likely motives are threat of exposure or hard time.

The former rules out anybody already on the US Attorney' "A" list but the latter may not.

Where did the money go? Supposedly bigtime scams, but I don't see the vics with 5 million in the Bank of Colts Neck. Did any of the deals file with the SEC? Are there major unusual transfers of funds from any of these deals to anyone we know??

This might be a productive avenue of inquiry.

Or, maybe it was as Eddy Blinker seems to think, a double suicide. :)

<< Both as vendetta and as an example to those that might need persuading that the profits of a previous illicit venture be returned to set the records straight.
I think we can rule out the SEC. This is not their style at all.>>

for example of current SEC Style [oxymorontrosity] of vendetta and example-making see:
