NEC CSD Delivers Powerful New Choices in Mobile Computing Line
Three New Notebooks Feature Intel's New Pentium III Processor and Position NEC In a Leading Market Role

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1999--NEC Computer Systems Division (NEC CSD) today announced three new notebook computers that broaden the diversity of its mobile computing line by catering to many different types of users. The new NEC products, the Versa® FX, Versa VX and LXi, notebook computers, feature Intel's new Pentium® III processor and offer full desktop replacement, convenience and slim line features, positioning the company in a leading role in the mobile computing market for the 21st century.

''With introduction of the three new products, our customers should be able to further appreciate the benefits of choosing the NEC brand,'' said Michael DeNeffe, vice president of Product Marketing. ''Each of our computers offers something different to users. Our new notebooks are extremely competitive in performance, pricing and convenience and address the wide variety of marketplace requirements as we enter into the new millennium.''

This family of NEC mobile computing products is designed for customers with different needs, those requiring the full function of a desktop to those simply needing to send an electronic mail while on the road. In addition to the new products, the NEC mobile computing family includes the award-winning Versa SX and Versa LX, NEC's other high-performance notebook computers, and the Mobile Pro(TM) 770 and 800 HP/Cs, both Windows® CE handheld devices.

The Versa FX, Versa VX and Versa LXi notebooks all offer built-in Mini PCI ports, a variety of Intel CPUs, a host of large capacity hard disk drives (HDDs) and versions of Microsoft's Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT(TM) or Windows 2000 operating systems. NEC's Ultracare(SM) Extended Service and support also is included with the new notebook computers.

Weighing in at 3.5 pounds and with a profile of less than 1-inch thick, the Versa FX notebook is designed to satisfy the needs of highly mobile users. The Versa FX ships with up to a 12-gigabyte (GB) HDD--or the equivalent of 120 meters of shelved library books--and a three-cell battery, with options of six- or nine-cell for those requiring extended battery life. Usability in the Versa FX notebook is enhanced with a full-sized, (18.8 mm pitch) keyboard and a 12.1-inch TFT display. The Versa FX incorporates Intel's Pentium III 400MHz processor and includes external CD-ROM and floppy disk drives. Prices for models of the Versa FX notebook begin at $2,499.

The Versa VX notebook offers convenience and ease-of-use in a 1.6-inch size and weighs 6.4 pounds. The product provides a user-swappable 6GB HDD for fast customer replacement, with upgrades up to12GB HDDs. The Versa VX notebook incorporates Intel's Pentium III processors up to 500MHz and Intel's 400 or 433MHz Celeron(TM) processor. The Versa VX also offers a choice of 12.1-inch SVGA TFT display, or a 14.1-inch XGA TFT display, and a convenient port replicator that provides one-step attachments to peripherals and LAN. Prices for models of the Versa VX range from $1,699 to $3,599.

The Versa LXi notebook delivers high performance and versatility while maintaining compatibility with previous generations of the high-performance Versa SX and LX notebook computers, including docking capability. The product is designed with the same built-in reliability and durability that earned the Versa LX notebook the 1999 PC Computing magazine's Torture Test Award. Now, the Versa LXi has been re-engineered to deliver optimal performance from Intel's current Pentium III 500 MHz processors and future Pentium III processors. This notebook incorporates a built-in floppy drive, or SuperDisk 120MB Drive, and modular VersaBay(TM) III technology with features, such as a 15-inch XGA TFT display, targeted for desktop-replacement network environments. Prices for the Versa LXi notebook start at $2,999.
