Ref-<Production is ahead of schedule. 100's of thousands shipped accurate. Next order of magnitude this week.

Otelleni did not lie. >

The Coppermine Launch did not have the widespread availability which is typical of Intel launches for the last several years. It was an order of magnitude better than the Athlon launch, but not upto Intel's own standards. To meet the past standards would have required a launch two or three weeks later, putting it uncomfortably close to the Christmas shopping season.

Strategically the Coppermine achieved an important objective. Intel needed to have performance parity/superiority over the Athlon, to prevent the Athlon infrastructure from gaining any more momentum. The Athlon would have not caused much financial damage in Q4/Q1, but the media focus on the 'speed crown' would have led to more motherboard, chipset and software support for the Athlon platform, which would have hurt Intel next year.

Unfortunately to fight the 'phantom Athlon launches ', Intel had to lower its standards. IMHO Intel should have disclosed the performance enhancements earlier than it did.

The FLOPPERMINE jokes remind me of the DECELERON jokes. The FLOPPERMINE will not sound funny a month from now.

PB,

Intel will have shipped a million Coppermines by the end of the week? Are you sure? So far, there haven't been very many for sale anywhere.

Dan

PB re <<Production is ahead of schedule.>>

For goodness sake PB, WHERE ARE ALL THE COPPERMINES?

Yields are great, Production ahead of schedule, inventory at zero... No coppermine anywhere. Can you explain what the deal is?

Also I noticed there is not a single vendor offering the PIII 600B or 533B at pricewatch.

Vendors offering the K7 600, 650 and 700 are increasing in number as well as the vendors offering MB's for Athlon.
