Oracle, Siemens Hook Up To Link Company Data

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Reuters) - Database software giant Oracle Corp (Nasdaq:ORCL - news). and German phone equipment maker Siemens AG are joining forces to develop products that will link data stored across myriad digital directories at corporations.

The two will announce the effort, products from which are expected by June at the latest, in a news release Tuesday morning.

Though the market for the technology, called metadirectories, is now small at about $60 million a year, as companies seek to cut costs and link different computer systems and data banks, having information about customers, employees and the like all in one place is critical to e-business, an Oracle executive said.

''It's a pretty important part of e-business and businesses are looking more and more at the cost of doing business,'' said Jeremy Burton, vice president of server marketing for Oracle. ''The way you drive that cost down is you link your different systems together.''

Siemens is already the leader in the metadirectory market, according to consulting firm Radicati Group, based in Palo Alto, Calif. But the sales to be made from the consulting services required to set up, run and maintain the metadirectories is six-fold the $60 million amount.

''Oracle had the strength in databases but they needed a partner very badly that understood the directory space and understood metadirectories,'' said Sarah Radicati. ''This gives them not only a good technology but also a partner that is strong and credible.''

Oracle is the largest maker of database software.

''Our experience in the directory space goes back more than 10 years (and that) coupled with Oracle's experience should be a great combination,'' said Peter Schnitter, head of metadirectories for Siemens.

Schnitter said the two companies would target the mutually developed product at Fortune 2000 companies, as well as telecommunications and Internet service providers.
