That would not seem to me to be in Mr. Conkling's best interests. I would think he would have more reason to be helpful than not. Certainly not to mislead. As the first civilian on the scene after the murders, it must have been a pretty hair raising sight for those two associates. What does one think upon discovering such a scene? Might he not have had reason to fear that the killer(s) would still be around? Might he have not had reason to think he might have been included in the party if he had been there? How long those minutes waiting for the authorities might have been. Was he for instance armed himself?

Carolyn, Maybe Conkling is lying I would doubt that Conkling would be lying. If he were guilty of the crime why return to the scene? If you were guilty, would you return? Why take a chance that someone might have seen you (or your vehicle) and your return might spark that someone's memory. IMO, not a smart move to return to the scene. On the other hand, let's assume that Conkling is completely innocent. You discover your deceased friends and the ghastly scene. What do you do? Run and pretend you know nothing? Not likely, because once you entered the house, you contaminated the scene and the evidence. You'd do exactly what Conkling and friend did, which was to call the authorities and in all likelihood tell the truth regarding your presence there and anything related to the scene. You might hedge and lie regarding background information (covering your own butt or making yourself look better than you are), but you don't lie regarding the murder scene itself (especially if you're innocent). You don't want make yourself into the prime suspect in a murder case. JMO... KJC
