Len, Hi! The SAN market is a small yet growing part of the overall storage marketplace. EMC has made a name for themselves by consolidating storage for many existing computer systems. According to EMC, they have 60% share of the mainframe storage market, 35% share of the open systems market, and less than 10% share of the middle market. Their revenue is currently coming from these areas.

SAN's are new and have great potential over the next few years. I was curious about these numbers myself because I thought that the SAN would be much greater than the projections by Gartner Group/Dataquest. I guess that many existing systems will remain as is is and will not be converted to SAN's. EMC will reach $10 billion in 2001 through a combination of growth in existing mainframe business, open systems business, middle market, software sales, and new opportunities such as SAN's.

Best,

Duncan

Len, maybe you're challenging the wrong assumption. :-)
