Carolyn,

I don't think that Conkling had anything to hide in his presence at the scene. He did have an appointment with Chalem for that evening. I don't know whether or not it was unusual to be unable to reach Chalem by telephone, but for the purposes of speculation, let's say it was unusual. After all, Chalem and Lehmann both had cell phones, probably in addition to the telephone in the house. So not being able to rouse them by telephone might be suspicious. But how suspicious? If you were calling your 90 year old grandfather and couldn't reach him, you might call the local police and have them do a welfare check. Would you do the same for young, healthy adults? No, I think that Conkling might have had some worries about Chalem and/or Lehmann, but I don't think he even remotely suspected the scene he walked into.
