My @home subnet mask is set at 255.255.252.0

Well, maybe a good guess, maybe not.

What the subnet mask specifies, along with the IP
address, is the range of addresses that can be reached
without routing through a gateway.

255.255.255.0 means you can send to 256 different
IP addresses without going through a gateway.
The gateway itself has to be one of these.

Specify too restrictive a mask and you can't get to the gateway. Specify too broad and you can't reach some IP
addresses because packets won't get routed.
