Goutama - Re: "Not related to AMD, but nonetheless an important reminder to all that are complacent with monopolies - $219 for upgrade to Windows 2000 "

That's OUTRAGEOUS !

How can Microsoft price their OS at less than HALF the cost of an Athlon ?

Microsoft should be sued - in order to double their price to bring it in line with Athlon pricing !

Not related to AMD, but nonetheless an important reminder to all that are complacent with monopolies -

$219 for upgrade to Windows 2000

(I wasn't going to respond to this, but Greg Nus posted on the MSFT thread requesting it...)

While accurate, that's a pretty deceiving number.

The $219 figure is for an upgrade from Win95/98. Windows 2000 Pro is targeted at businesses, which are often running NT4. The upgrade price from NT4 is substantially less.

Also, that's a quantity 1, FULL RETAIL price. Given the plethora of superstores (Costco, Wal-Mart) and internet discounters, I doubt many people will pay full retail. Business should be purchasing under Open License or Select agreements, and will pay even less.
