Corel and Toshiba Partner to Serve European Market: Corel(r) WordPerfect(r) Suite 8 to be bundled on Toshiba computers

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--Corel Corporation (NASDAQ: CORL, TSE: COR) is pleased to announce that it has signed a major bundling agreement with Toshiba in the European market. Corel(r) WordPerfect(r) Suite8 OEM will be bundled on Toshiba's consumer notebooks in Europe.

Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 OEM will be available on the Satellite 2610CDT and 2650XDVD machines in the following languages: International English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Swedish, Danish and Finnish. Customers in Europe who purchase a Toshiba computer bundled with Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 will receive a special coupon to upgrade to WordPerfect(r) Office 2000.

"This is a phenomenal opportunity which will significantly increase the penetration of our WordPerfect productivity applications throughout Europe," said Kevin McNeil, vice president of worldwide OEM sales at Corel Corporation. "The inclusion of EurWordPerfect suite with Toshiba's computers will provide consumers in Europe with a great combination of technology and value."

Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 is a full-featured office productivity suite with Corel WordPerfect 8 for fast and efficient word processing and a number of other world-class applications. WordPerfect Office 2000 is Corel's latest release of the WordPerfect suite and is packed with powerful software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and Web publishing.

...Mr. Cowpland said Corel Corp.'s WordPerfect products have experienced first-hand the troubles of competing in a market where Microsoft supplies 90 per cent of computer operating systems. "We hold our own in direct competition at the retail level with 40 per cent of sales. But we don't do well in getting our product on to computers at the manufacturers' level. The reason is the tied sales that Microsoft uses to get its products put into computers along with the Windows operating system."

He declined to say whether Corel might seek damages against Microsoft if the case leads to a final ruling that Microsoft violated anti-trust rules...
