Who said anything about "knee jerk," neocon? The point I am trying to make is that the days of Wilson are long gone, and we have gone to the opposite extreme, making an idol out of the Status Quo. Thus, we have a situation in which "to those that have it shall be given; from those that have not shall be taken away even that which they have."

The Austro-Hungarian Empire does not count, because it no longer exists. I am talking about the present situation, not about the past.

And needless to say, I still disagree with you about the fundamental "mono-ethnicity" of Europe. An American is an American -- his national origin is unimportant. That really is not true in Europe, especially in Eastern Europe. A Hungarian living in Romania is not considered (and generally does not consider himself) a Romanian, even though he is a Romanian citizen, for example. And vice versa.

I have not been advocating mass secession. At the same time, it is not realistic to assume you can freeze the map of the world forever. If there is a law of history, it is this: everything changes, including the map.
