Ford delivers electric cars in Canada November 02, 1999 17:10 MONTREAL, Nov. 2 (UPI) - Ford of Canada said Tuesday it completed delivery of its first electric-powered vehicle to Canadian customers. Ford of Canada President Bobbie Gaunt said at a news conference that 16 Ford Ranger EV pickup trucks have been delivered to Quebec-based customers, including eight to Hydro-Quebec, the provincial power utility. Gaunt said the new vehicle works on a lead-acid battery and can run for 50 miles (80 km) before it needs recharging. It can accelerate from zero to 50 mph (80 kph) in 12.5 seconds. When powered by a nickel-metal-hydrate battery, the range increases to 78 miles (125 km). ''Our goal,'' Gaunt said, ''is to move environmentally friendly vehicle technology out of the research labs and into our customers hands.'' ''Among the advantages of electric vehicles,'' company executive Terry Spyropoulos said, ''are zero tailpipe emissions, reduced maintenance and improved energy efficiency over the gasoline engine.'' Both types of battery systems are charged from a specially designed conductive charging station, he said, and Hydro Quebec is supplying and installing power control systems for owners of the vehicle. The Ford Ranger EV is one of a number of alternative fuel vehicles Ford of Canada has been working on. Others include several low emission vehicles now being introduced into the market. Last year, Ford of Canada also went into partnership with the British Columbia-based company Ballard Power Systems, to develop fuel cell technology as an alternative to the internal combustion engine. -- Copyright 1999 by United Press International.
