I think this is an important point most people miss - stocks are anything but a zero sum game.

The flip side to your point is also true - stocks can rise without any offsetting "cost," except in terms of market caps. Thus, "wealth" is essentially from nothing.

Rather an interesting market- money can appear and disappear for no particular reason.
