Nasdaq Storms Past 3,000
Brown Bag Lunch
November 02, 1999
by Tish Williams

The Nasdaq chipped away at the 3,000-point threshold Tuesday morning, then thundered over the line,
straining ahead 43.41 points to 3,011.06. The Dow got a 94.51-point boost of its own to 10,743.02
on flat September personal income numbers. More robust consumer spending numbers than expected
for September (an 0.4 percent increase) didn't temper the markets' rally.

Big Picture: International markets stood by nervously, wondering why the United States is still in rally
mode. Overnight Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.03 percent and the Hong Kong Hang Seng crept up 0.1
percent. In Europe early this morning the German DAX climber 0.39 percent, while the U.K. FTSE
slipped 0.51 percent.

It wasn't a fake rally, however, as NYSE advancers outnumbered decliners 17-to-10. On the Nasdaq,
there were 19 winners for every 13 losers.
