The Bomb Squad vans pulled to the front of the house and the men poured out. We were not allowed in our house until they finished their investigation. Their one find was a vial of propylene glycol which they wanted to know about. I use it 50/50 with water to maintain a constant 70% relative humidity in my cigar humidor.

We then invited the FBI men into the house. I took them into my office and showed them all the correspondence, and the envelopes in which the letters were sent.

The SEC complained to the FBI that the letter had an odor. The envelopes were old, good grade, made of sulfite pulp which over a period of time does get an odor. The SEC letter and envelope were sent to the FBI lab for analysis. I gave a sample out of my supply to the FBI together with copies of the correspondence. I haven't heard anything since, and the FBI said I probably wouldn't.

The only prior contact I had with the FBI was in 1943 when I was a student at Berkeley and was working on the cyclotron. They checked everyone! My experience with them has both times been pleasant.

It is still awesome that one letter in particular, could generate such a reaction. At least I know it got opened. My other letters to the SEC were unanswered or had perfunctory standard replies about confidentiality of investigations. I had certainly believed that I would get more reaction out of my Congressman, who is on the House Commerce Committee, but aside from one response that he was forwarding my original letter sent in July to Chairman Levitt - nada.

So we languish in pink sheet purgatory.

For how long, O Lord, how long??
