S3-Via venture to pursue chip
sets, acquisitions

HSINCHU, Taiwan ? S3 Inc. and Via Technologies Inc. today unveiled a joint venture in high-end chip sets for PC graphics and core logic used in desktop personal computers and notebook systems.

The new venture, called S3-Via Inc., expands on a previously announced alliance between the two companies and will have exclusive access to technology and distribution rights for developed products between S3 and Via. In addition, the joint venture has the financial backing from S3 and Via to pursue acquisitions of other companies and technologies related to the chip set segment.

The S3-Via venture is expected to ship samples of its first products before the end of this year, with volume deliveries beginning early 2000. The new venture has already secured major design wins with two of the world's top five PC manufacturers, according to Ken Potashner, CEO of S3 in Santa Clara, Calif.

"Looking forward, we see a substantial opportunity in the volume OEM PC market for integrated products that provide tremendous cost-savings without sacrificing performance," said Wen-Chi Chen, president and chief executive officer of Via Technologies in Taiwan. "Based on S3's cutting-edge graphics and video technology and Via's comprehensive chip set technology, we believe our joint venture can meet this need and outperform the rest of the industry in bringing winning integrated solutions to market."

According to the partners, the joint venture has begun development work on next-generation chip set designs, based on technologies from S3 and Via. The products will include mobile chip sets based on S3's Savage/IX architecture and the Savage2000 platform for desktop PCs as well as systems based on Athlon microprocessors from Advanced Micron Devices Inc.
