U S West, the smallest of the five Baby Bells, said the transaction was approved by 93.7 percent of the votes cast at a special meeting of its shareholders. Qwest, the No. 4 U.S. long-distance company, said more than 97 percent of votes cast by its shareholders were in favor of the deal.

The merger is expected to close by mid-2000.
