Re: Marconi SDH/WDM Telecom Italia Win

elmatador,
Thanks for that brief history. It will come in handy as I do my DD on Marconi.

Now I've heard of smooth mergers before, but this is ridiculous <VBG>. So a few days BEFORE the Nokia SDH/DWDM technology purchase is announced, Marconi announces a SDH/WDM win? Obviously Marconi already had some expertise or re-sold SDH/WDM equipment.

Marconi's Wave Division Multiplexing Wins for New Italian Super-Network

10/29/99 Telecom Italia, Italy's national operator, has awarded an exclusive contract worth œ32 million (90 billion Lira) for Marconi Communications, a subsidiary of GEC, to supply the core transmission equipment for a new, high-bandwidth trunk network serving the whole country. This is the first phase of a three-year agreement which is likely to be worth up to œ100M to Marconi.

The project will provide a massive increase in bandwidth capacity along 10,000 km of existing optical fiber cable by using Marconi's latest generation of SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) and WDM (wave division multiplexing) technologies. Current transmission speeds of 2.5 Gbit/s on most of the existing national network will be boosted by a factor of 10, to 25 Gbit/s. On main trunk routes between cities and business centers, it may be increased by 40 times, to 100 Gbit/s. This will massively data handling capacities in the Italian network for all types of telecommunications traffic, from conventional telephone calls to the Internet.
