Good September Strength in the Global Billings Report...

September becomes strongest month in chip recovery, says SIA

Semiconductor Business News

SAN JOSE -- Semiconductor sales grew 6.4% in September to $12.7 billion compared to $11.93 billion in August, according to new market data released today by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) here. September's sales figure was 24% higher than the same month last year, when the industry was starting to dig itself out of a recession.

"This month's global sales numbers are the largest we have seen all year continuing the growth pattern that commenced in mid-1998," declared George Scalise, president of the SIA. "These numbers are in line with our industry forecast we released last Wednesday [Oct. 27]."

The SIA's 1999-2002 industry forecast calls for semiconductor sales to top $144 billion with 15% growth in this year (see Oct. 27 story).

As in previous months, September's chip revenue growth was especially strong in Japan and Asia, which were hardest hit by the 1998 slump. Using a three-month moving average, the SIA reported that chip sales in Japan grew 5.7% in September to $2.79 billion compared to $2.64 billion in August. September's semiconductor billings in Japan were 37.4% higher than $2.03 billion recorded in the same month last year.

Semiconductor sales in the Asia Pacific region grew 9.4% in September to $3.20 billion vs. $2.93 billion in August. The region's chip revenues were 34.5% higher than the $2.38 billion recorded in September 1998.

The SIA also reported that chip sales in the Americas grew 3.2% to $4.04 billion from $3.91 billion in August. Compared to last year, September's sales grew 10.2% from $3.45 billion recorded in September 1998.

Europe's semiconductor sales increased 9.0% in September to $2.67 billion compared to $2.45 billion in August. September's European semiconductor sales were 14.6% higher than last year's $2.37 billion, according to the monthly SIA Global Sales Report, which is based on data tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization representing about 70 companies.
