In fact they are three of the most profitable companies on the Nasdaq.

Hmmm, of the top of my head? Let's just stick to public companies:

Electronic Arts
Activision
Eidos
Havas Interactive
Infogrames
Sony
Nintendo
Sega (win some lose some)
Microsoft

Those are just some of the software companies. I could list many more...

Not to mention all the hardware development and purchase that is driven by gaming. Ever hear of MMX? 3d graphics? Color monitors?

One reason why people buy computers is to play games. It is a simple fact. It is not the primary reason, but it is one reason. Games are also intensive applications. They often rely heavily on floating point performance, graphics subsystems, and combinations of a computer's various elements. Therefore, they are often reasonably good tools to benchmark and compare systems. Games can also identify system bottlenecks because they may present relative challenges to certain components. How a game scales when run on a certain graphics card may in turn reflect processor performance. Alternatively, some graphics cards may limit the performance of the game with increased cpu power as a negligible factor. Finally, it is important to consider that many customers of high-end machines are game players. Hardware reviews often use games as benchmarking devices because it appropriately targets the audience for these purchases.
