Thanks for the reference - page 26 is especially interesting as it explains in detail how the current calibration is done.

By doubling the output currents, you could drive a doubly terminated bus, and this would eliminate the problems with output drive compliance that we have discussed here recently. ... Do you have an explanation of why the 90mA is in all the Rambus specs? The above seems like the one to me.

You may well be right. What is particularly neat is that as far as I can see double termination is totally transparent. That is, one could just add the extra resistors and everything would automatically set itself up without any need for silicon or even software changes. Obviously the power consumption would increase, but as you say this would completely eliminate the (hypothetical) problem with multiple signals coinciding at a device output when it is transmitting.

If the triple coincidence hypothesis is true, then there would be no problem (apart from increased power) in using three, or perhaps even more RIMMs with double termination.

Very reassuring.
